Valentine’s Day activities in Ms Carty’s 4th Class

Happy Valentine’s Day!! We’ve used the theme of Valentine’s Day in English and Art lessons this week.

In our English lessons, we talked about idioms that are associated with love such as : Love is blind, wear your heart on your sleeve and cold hearted. We drew funny cartoons to match each idiom. We also wrote ‘I love….’ heart shaped poems which helped us to remember the feelings that we love such as ‘I love cold ice cream on a really hot day or I love the smell of my mam’s cup of coffee in the morning’.

In Art we made Oragami boxes from old Christmas and birthday cards. They were tricky to fold but we got there! We decorated the boxes and popped our Last Rolo inside for someone special to enjoy.

Ms Carty’s class get a taste of World War 2.

In January, our class learned about World War 2 and how children in Britain lived during the war. We were surprised to learn that a lot of food we eat today was rationed during the war such as sausages, bacon and eggs. Families had to make meals using only a few ingredients that were cheap to buy. To understand exactly how children in Britain lived, we made Cheese Pudding, which was a popular dish during the war. It was easy to make and surprisingly tasty!

All Ireland visitors

We had some very exciting visitors to Scoil Maelruain yesterday when Michael Darragh MacAuley and Eamonn Fennell from the Dublin Senior Football team dropped in with the Sam Maguire cup! They gave us lots of tips and answered loads of our questions about the All Ireland Final and G.A.A. Check out all our pictures with the cup![[Show as slideshow]]

Bird is the Word

Check out the pictures of the “Bird is the Word” project, which was completed by students of 5^th(Ms. Biesty) and 6^th (Ms. Walsh) class, and was displayed at the RDS Primary Science Fair earlier this month.

For three weeks students monitored and recorded bird activity in the school garden three times daily. Initially there was no food provided for the birds and then we added peanuts during week 2 and seeds during week 3. We attracted a large variety of birds to the garden including greenfinches, chaffinches, goldfinches, magpies, blue tits and sparrows. The most common visitor to our garden was the chaffinch and during the 3rd week we logged over 200 birds!

We displayed our project as part of the RDS Primary Science Fair and you can now see it displayed in the halla!

Science Week Explosions!

Students from 5th (Ms. Biesty) & 6th class (Ms. Walsh) enjoyed a great Science Show from Scientific Sue in Tallaght I.T. as part of Science Week. Some brave pupils even volunteered to help Sue out with some of her experiments which included colour changes, super foams, disgusting slime & a fire breathing dragon![[Show as slideshow]]

Christmas Concerts 2011

In December we held our annual Christmas Concerts. There was huge variety from plays and poems, to Irish dancing and the choir singing pop songs and carols. The Nativity was performed by Ms Flood’s class, Ms Carty’s did a Haka ‘as Gaeilge’ and we had a beautiful chime bar piece from Ms Biesty’s music club. Well done to all the children and teachers who worked so hard to put on a fabulous show.

Hallelujah Concert 2011

On Monday 12th December the School Choir performed at the Hallelujah Concert in the RDS. We sang with over 1000 school children from all over Ireland, conducted by Gearóid Grant. We also were backing singers for Irish group The High Kings, young singer Connie Talbot and singer Randolph Matthews. The choir sung their hearts out and danced the night away, a great night was had by all. We have not packed our Santa hats away yet! We hope to perform a few of the songs at the School Christmas Concert on Wednesday 21st. Looking forward to seeing you there. Many thanks to Ms Walsh and Ms Biesty for their help and support. Well done to all the choir members involved.

Halloween Art Competition

We had lots of great entries for the Halloween Art Competition. The foyer looked really spooky just in time for Halloween. Thanks to Ms Roberts and all the SNAs for organising and setting up the display. Well done to all those who took part.
