Our Day in Croke Park

Well done to the Senior Boys Hurling team who took part in the Hurling final in Croke Park today. They gave it their all in the match but unfortunately we did not get the win we all wanted. Thanks to the boys, Mr Moore and Mr. De Paor who all put in so much hard work during the year to get us to the final.  Well done to all the great supporters who cheered the boys on in Croker and welcomed them home with a fitting guard of honour for our team.

WoW & CoW

Wednesday is COW (cycle on Wednesday) and WOW (walk on Wednesday) day! Each week members of the Green Schools and Active Schools committee ask people how they travel to school and gather the information to see which class tops the poll with the highest number of active school travelers!  The results are displayed on the Halla door and the winning class is awarded the Golden Boot for the week! Congratulations to students in Mr Lucas’s  5th Class students who are the first winners of the Golden Boot!

Active School Flag

Scoil Maelruain Senior is currently working towards achieving Active Schools Flag status. The Active School Flag was launched by the Department of Education and is a non-competitive initiative that encourages schools to evaluate their current provision of P.E. and extracurricular sports to children and to examine whether they can be improved upon. We want to raise awareness about the importance of enjoyment, play and keeping fit and the Active Flags initiative helps us to do this.

Preparation for obtaining the Flag has already started with representatives from each class coming together with teachers to form a committee that is looking at new ways of to encourage all pupils to be more active. Check out the pictures from our committee meeting and first Active Flag lunch time activity which shows 3rd class students taking part in lunchtime “Station Fun”.

Keep a close eye on the school website to check out all the new activities and initiatives that will be coming up over the next few weeks.

Please take a look at the website www.activeschoolflag.ie to find out more about the Active School Flag.
