Christmas Newsletter 2017
The staff and pupils of Scoil Maelruain Senior wish you a Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.  School finishes at twelve noon on Friday December 22nd  and reopens on January 8th 2018. Board of Management:. The members are Frank Moran, Thomas Conway, Mairead Cullivan,  Martina Comerford, Paul Flood, Louise Kavanagh, Margaret Murphy and Caitriona Hogan. Many thanks to  Declan Kenny who had to step down earlier this year. Enrolment and Staffing:     442 pupils, 24 teachers and 5 Special Needs Assistants.
Highlights of This Term
Christmas Concert: Well done to all the classes that took part in our Christmas Concert this year. It was a wonderful success. A special thanks to our drama teacher Ciara who helped with some of the items this year.
Forecast Cards: Thanks to everyone who supported our fund-raising efforts with the forecasts cards this year. All moneys raised fund our sporting activities.
Friendship Week: Friendship Week took place during the first week in October. Lots of classes participated through talk and discussion, poetry, stories and art.
Hallowe’en Activities: Scoil Maelruain celebrated Hallowe’en in style, A lot of effort went into making amazing recycled costumes. The foyer was transformed into a spooky, scary space with amazing art and craft.
Science Week       During Science Week this year Ms. McEvoy’s class went to the Circus of Science in I.T.T. and took part in an exhibition on Forces. Ms. Flood’s class and Ms. Nolan’s class went to the “The Science of Bubbles” with Scientific Sue in Tallaght Library. Mr. Lucas brought his class to “The Strength of Jellies” also in Tallaght Library.
Skipping         We were delighted to welcome back Mark McCabe who runs Skip N Rope to the school this term. Each class had a skipping session with Mark and learned some amazing skipping skills which were demonstrated to the whole school during a skipping exhibition.
Special Visitors This year we have been delighted to have the Brendan Martin cup and the Sam Maguire in the school. Our own past pupil Olwen Carey brought in the Ladies All Ireland Cup and we are so proud of Olwen’s success. Michael Darragh Macauley brought in the Sam Maguire and participated in Q and A session hosted by Mr. Broderick. We were delighted to welcome World Darts Champion Katie Sheldon back to our school this week. Katie travelled to Japan to take part in the tournament, what an amazing adventure to have! National History Museum All 3rd classes went to a Viking Workshop in The National Museum of Ireland and they all visited the Dead Zoo.
Tallaght Library The 4th class teachers took their classes to Tallaght Library to meet with the Librarian.
Collins Barracks Mrs. J. O Reilly class visited Collins Barracks and took part in the “If Things could Talk” workshop.
Music: • Ms. M Murphy’s choir practice every Tuesday lunchtime and Thursday after school with the assistance of Ms. McEvoy. The choir held a recital at Kiltipper Nursing Home on Monday December19th. Sport: • Swimming is running at the moment. All classes have the opportunity to attend during the school year. • Boys and Girls football coaches: Thanks to Paula McGuigan, Ms. Flood, Ms. Byrne, Mr. Broderick, Mr. Moore, Mr. Kelly, Ms. Ryan, Mr. de Paor, Ms. Young and Mr. Macauley. • Basketball training and tournaments took place this term. Thanks to Ms. Calally, Ms. Flood, Ms. Ryan and Ms. J O’Reilly who are all involved. Congratulations to our boys who won a final in the Basketball Arena. • Badminton: Thanks to Mr. Lucas, Ms. Calally, Ms. Walsh, Ms, Biesty, Ms. Corcoran, Ms. Flynn and Ms. Byrne who teach the children how to play badminton before the school day starts.
Paired Reading: Ms. McEvoy’s class take part in paired reading with all of the 3rd classes.
Chess: Mr. Lucas’ chess club for fifth and sixth class pupils is up and running. Some third class pupils are being taught the basic moves by Connie.
Recycling: Ms. McHugh’s green committee are busy recycling clothes, batteries, stamps and phones. Well done to everyone who donated so far this year and thanks to the green committee for all their hard work.
Rainbows: Rainbows supports children coping with loss – separation or bereavement. Seven of our teachers have been trained by Rainbows. Thanks to Ms. S. Murphy, Ms. N. Biesty, Ms. Walsh, Mrs. J. O Reilly, Ms. M. Murphy and Ms. F. Callaly who are involved this term.
Cake Sale: The annual cake sale and raffle in aid of the St. Vincent de Paul was held on Wednesday 13th December.  An amazing €2,550 was raised for this worthy charity. We are very grateful for all the donations of cakes and raffle prizes received. Thank you to Ms. S. Murphy and Ms. Walsh for organising the event.

Scoil Maelruain Takes This Opportunity to Sincerely Thank
The Board of Management  The Parents’ Association of Scoil Maelruain Senior: Chairperson- Michelle Farrell, Secretary – Denise Kieran and Treasurer – Maria Kellett. A huge thank you to the Parents Association who recently bought 6 Ipads and library books for our sixth classes. They also funded a new set of jerseys for the gaelic teams and new singlets for our athletes and donated money towards a sensory area. We are all looking forward to using these new resources.   Keep up to date with all that’s happening on the Scoil Maelruain Snr Parents Association Facebook Page.  The Lotto Committee – Susan Thomas, Catherine Clayton, Annette Condon, Michelle Farrell, Jenny Keane,                  Karen Quinn, Mary Giglione and Pamela Conway. Tickets can be bought in the school every Wednesday morning. If you are interested in helping out please contact Fiona.  Fr. Michael Hurley, our school chaplain, who pays regular visits to the school.  Rosanne Kavanagh and Deirdre Dunne of the School Completion Programme.  All the wonderful teachers who are so committed to the school and give so freely of their time organising and supervising extra curricular activities.  Our diligent, flexible SNA’s, Miriam, Lucy, Maureen, Frances and Connie who are always willing to help out with school activities.  Orla Hardy and Joan Green who keep the school clean.  Our fabulous secretary Fiona who keeps the school running smoothly.  Finally – Bernard who is always cheerfully on hand.
We remember at this time all the pupils and staff who lost loved ones during the year.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.
