November News

Our class has been quite busy so far in November. We took part in a great skipping workshop which helped us to learn lots of new skills. We also took part in a science experiment during Science week. We wanted to find out about insulation so we gathered some materials( cotton wool / tin foil / fabric / newspaper and bubble wrap)  and tested them to see which material would keep hot water the hottest for longest. We make our predictions and carried out the experiment. Some of us were surprised to find that the cotton wool was the best insulator.

We have also been learning a robot song ‘as Gaeilge’ which we really enjoyed singing.

Hallowe’en 2015

Our annual Hallowe’en fancy dress and art competition was held on Friday the 23rd of October. Children and indeed families went to great lengths creating amazing costumes – fridges, hot air balloons, barbie dolls and barbie teachers, washing machines and minions were in plentiful supply. This ‘Dress Up’ day raised over €430 for Jonathan Kiernan and his class mates in St. John of Gods school.

The children also decorated the foyer with amazing art pieces to create a Hallowe’en atmosphere..

Thanks to Ms. Dunning and her class who organised the ‘In Memory of Christine Day’. Well done to all the boys and girls who participated in the fun day!!!!

On Monday the 16th of October two members of the Irish Defence Forces paid a visit to Scoil Maelruain. They taught us about the 1916 Rising. They read the Proclamation. Sean also read part of it. They also taught us about our National Flag. They presented Sean  with a copy of the Proclamation and Perside and Ella with the National Flag.  Then we all  sang the National Anthem.

Ms. Dunning brought her great grandmother Bessie Nolan who is 103 years old. She was alive during the 1916 Rising and had a lot of stories to tell us. Bessie starred in the movie ‘Older than Ireland’. Today is her 104th birthday.

Congratulations Scoil Maelruain!!!!

We all had a fantastic day in Croke Park on Wednesday October 21st. Our girls played St. Vincent de Paul Marino in the final of the Chomhar Linn Shield. It was a nail biting final. Our girls put up a great fight and overcame St. Vincent’s by the narrowest of margins-one point!! It was a fantastic team performance by each and every one of the girls. There were great celebrations when the referee blew the final whistle. All the spectators cheered the girls on and enjoyed every minute of their day out!!!!  Thanks a million to Paula McGuigan, Ms. Flood and Ms. Flynn who made the dream come true. Hope we make it to Croke Park again. Have a look at our photos.
